History of the Thouia Wood Boxes
The Thouia tree is a type of juniper tree native to southern Morocco.
It grows wild, and produces a large bulbous root that when dehydrated in kilns is
ideal for carving and crafting and has beautiful detailed grained patterns. It is a very dense wood that is extremely dexterous and has a wonderful Cedar aroma.
After a dehydration period, the wood, which is of limited quantity, is rationed out and sold to the local craftsmen, and they in turn, cut it up and skillfully turn it into masterpieces of sculptures and boxes. This all takes place in the coastal city of "Essaouira", one of the most beautiful cities in Morocco.
