- In terms of sheer numbers of individuals, biomass, numbers of species, and their existence
over geological time, insects have been and continue to be the most successful terrestrial
organisms. The fossil record tells us that insects have been around for at least 370 million years.
- One of the most abundant and diverse fossil deposits of insects in the world is the
Chapada do Araripe plateau in Brazil. The predominate formation is the Santana Formation , and is
Cretaceous in age. The preservation of the insects is generally quite good with features clear
enough to allow conclusive identification of many of the specimens.
