  • ** The Carcharocles megalodon, ( Carcharodon megalodon or megalodon )
  • The Carcharocles megalodon, ( Carcharodon megalodon or megalodon ), lived during the Miocene and Pliocene Epochs. At the end of the Pliocene Epoch, the species, became extinct. This was about 2 million years ago. The species is generally viewed as coming into existence about 10 million years ago. Before this, the species had the name Carcharocles angustidens.
  • The Carcharocles megalodon, ( Carcharodon megalodon or megalodon ), came from a lineage of sharks that is refered to as the Giant White Sharks or Mega-toothed sharks. Both terms are common names used for the Carcharocles, ( Carcharodon ), lineage although some experts use the former while some use the latter. As the lineage evolved in time, many different species names were used for the Carcharocles ( Carcharodon ) genus. These changes in species names occur at the end of Epochs and help scientist break down the lineage to reflect changes in the teeth structure.
  • The Carcharocles megalodon, ( Carcharodon megalodon or megalodon ), grew to approximately the size of a large bus or 40'. Earlier estimation of the Carcharocles megalodon, ( Carcharodon megalodon or megalodon ), being up to 100' were likely in error since the shark length was estimated by the shark jaw size, and early researchers overestimated the number of teeth in the jaw. We now know that it was much smaller than early predictions based on the vertebrae size. Since we know the approximate number of vertebrae in the shark and the vertebrae length, determining the shark link is not that difficult.
  • The Carcharocles megalodon, ( Carcharodon megalodon or megalodon ), was a large predatory shark that fed on mammals and large fish. Bones showing damage created by the Carcharocles megalodon, ( Carcharodon megalodon or megalodon ), are evident in the fossil record. It was evident that this shark fed on very large animals including it's primary food, whales.
