- Prehistoric Great White Shark Teeth
- Much of what is known today about the giant sharks of the past is because of studies of the modern great white shark,
Carcharodon carcharias, which first appeared during the pliocene. It was once believed that great white sharks and
megalodon sharks were related, but evidence now exists that suggests otherwise. Great Whites are now thought to have
evolved from Mako sharks instead (Isurus hastalis, broad toothed mako shark). Transitional teeth are found world wide
that clearly exhibit a transition from a smooth blade to a serrated one. Further, the teeth of the two species appear
identical except for the presence of serrations when compared side by side. Fossil teeth from C. carcharias can exceed
3 inches in length, and can be found in many locations world-wide.
